Caltans are humanoid sapients native to Caltas in the Valka Galaxy.

Biology

Caltans reach a height of around 1.2 metres, or four feet. The head is rather similar to a human's, and it has roughly the same tooth layout. They have good eyesight and excellent hearing, but poor smell.

They have a shaggy mane of thick, black hair around the neck and on top of the head. This hair is so thick it acts as a sort of cushion to anything aimed at the neck; this is effective against arrows and natural weapons, but much less effective against bullets and the light.

They have five fingers on each hand, including an opposable thumb. They have no claws. They have four toes on each foot, tipped with a blunt claw.

They are grey-skinned, though this does not have the effect of reflecting light. They tend not to be very muscular, instead favouring agility.

Intelligence and Psychology

They are a peaceful race, and seek to be at one with nature. They dislike war, and other forms of violence.

The race is headed by a council of ten members. While these are the ruling authority, they have a very democratic community, and the general public can overrule the council. Each city tends to have a mayor and its own smaller council of around five members, chosen for their honesty and kindness, and not for their bloodline.

Culture

Religion

They believe the Supreme Creator is the father of all gods, but also believe in their own gods. The most important ones are the God of Life, God of Peace, God of Beauty, God of Honesty, and the God of Reincarnation. They also have gods of war and death, though these are less worshipped.

They believe that after death, you will ascend to Eternal Paradise, but, if the God of Life does not deem you worthy to live there, you are sent to the God of Reincarnation, who will pick a new body for you, and give you another chance at Eternal Paradise.

Entertainment

The most popular forms of entertainment in Caltan culture are friendly games of their various sports. Running is one of the most common, along with their favourite game, Catch-Sphere.

The 'sphere' is an inflated leather ball. Players are divided into two teams, and must proceed to throw the ball to their teammates. However, should the ball touch the ground, the other team will gain possession of it. This is generally the other team to the one that failed to catch the ball. Tackles are allowed, and if the ball touches the ground during a tackle, it is considered the tackler's fault.

Near both ends of the pitch is a 'H' shape. A point is scored by throwing the ball between the two vertical poles and above the horizontal one, and having someone on the same team catch it on the other side. The game is played for the equivalent of one hundred human minutes, and at the end, whoever has the most points wins.

Technology

Despising war, their production of weapons does not fit in with the level of advancement in other technological areas.

  • Sniper Rifle: A sniper rifle can hold ten bullets at a time, and has laser sights and a foldable bipod. It has a range of around two hundred metres.
  • Biter Pistol: This pistol holds fifteen bullets at a time. It has a range of fifty metres and fires one bullet per second, and can be wielded one-handed.
  • Razer Machine Gun: This machine gun has an ammo clip that can hold two hundred minature explosive shells, and fires them at a rate of ten per second. It has a range of around one hundred and fifty metres.

They wear armour made of kevlar, with a thin layer of titanium on the external side. Commanders sometimes ornament their armour with gold or silver. Council members only are permitted to use diamond.

They have only developed one type of starship. They are called cruisers, and can be up to one kilometre long. They are powered by two large engines at the rear of the ship, each of which has a 'fin' on top. The bottom of the ship is a gentle curve, and the front is a gentle slope that levels out after reaching a certain height. They have armour made of kevlar, this time with an internal layer of titanium. They are only lightly armed, with mass drivers and a single laser, and can only reach a couple of times the speed of light. Some are capable of FTL through the Crossverse.

They also have a small repulsor field, but each square metre can only take the equivalent of around one kilogram of TNT.

Relations with other races

Katsoja and Styhacians

Caltans are often caught in the crossfire between these two warring races. Their planet has been completely decimated due to fights between the two for its possession.
