up to 2 metres

Diet:

Sapient

Technology:

Highly advanced (Class VIII)

The Deraia are a sapient species originally from Solin in the Viperius Galaxy.

Physiology

The Deraia are part-mechanical humanoids, with scaled skin, two arms and two legs. They stand between 1.5 and 2m tall.

Their skin has fish-like scales, and quite a rough surface to increase its surface area, allowing more heat to escape.

They have a gangly appearance, with their tissue wrapped tight around their bones. They are elegant and fast in motion, but not particularly strong on their own. Mechanical systems allow them this strength, and synthetic weaves give them greater durability.

They have two real eyes, which have quite poor vision, and two ears mounted above those eyes. They can therefore determine the direction of sounds accurately. Their head is shaped to give the best perception in front of them, showing their predatorial heritage.

They have many sharp canines at the front of their mouth, and grinding plates behind.

Intelligence

Sapients, the Deraia have advanced technology and science.

Their brain is smaller than a humans, but they have greater average creativity. They are also far more able to share ideas.

Their skin can change colour, to blue, silver, purple or black. This was originally for display, but also aids in camouflage and sharing emotions.

Society

Deraia are social creatures, living and moving with friends even in the modern world. They have close ties between siblings, but parents and children sever their relations at maturity. This means Deraia rarely make friends outside their age group.

Amongst other Deraia, they do make friends easily, but prefer to stay with others all their life. Within these friendship groups, they make decisions such as employment- they either all join or none do.

Deraia are active in galactic politics and industry. The corporation Dara Nucleomation was founded by Deraia.

Language

Deraia language is mainly consonants, and their words are of one to five syllables. Verbs and adverbs are united by the prefix ska-, and adjectives or participles have suffixes.

Clothing

On their homeworld, the Deraia wore no clothes, due to the heat, though the military wore frontal and shoulder body armour. This is done currently on warm planets. Elsewhere, they often wear thick textile coats, or even environmental suits.

Technology

Deraia have sophisticated cybernetics, nanotechnology and space travel systems. They are capable of travelling in FTL using systems which make them 'jump' through Cross-space, travelling to pre-mapped Rifts and then returning to real space (but taking several hours to recharge).

They are a colonising, exploratory race, with eighteen colonies and many of their species in residence on planets such as Centro and Kaedel's Hope.

They have fusion power, but have not mastered anti-matter. Most of their constructions are built with carbon nanotubes, by nanobots. They have comms transfer buoys between colonised worlds, which 'jump' information-carrying boxes between worlds.

Spaceships

Deraia spaceships can jump through space (as mentioned). They have nanotube-armour, nanobot self-repair systems and electromagnetic shields (which stop cosmic rays or charged particles). The ships also have fusion-warheaded missiles and large conventional rapid-fire cannons.

There are many classes:

Dahlla Freighters are 1300m long. They have only point-defence weaponry, but huge cargo holds and powerful drives for effective transport.

Duren Cruisers make up the majority of Deraia fleets. At 200m long, they are equipped with six Dlahk Cannons, six high-power masers, and six tubes for launching their Deron missiles.

The Draav Frigate is 380m long. It has six Dlahk cannons, four high-power masers, and eight missile tubes. These can launch both the ship's Deron missiles and its fusion warheads. However, it also has a nuclear cannon built into its hull. This launches nuclear shells rapidly, each with a yield of around fifteen megatons.

There are three Deraia military fleets, and one special fleet. There are around 480 ships.

The First Fleet is primarily for offence. It consists of eighty Duren-class cruisers and ten Draav-class frigates.

Lead Ship: DFFS Vanguard of Solin, Draav-class frigate

The Second Fleet mainly acts in defence. Within it, there are one hundred and forty Duren-class cruisers and five Draav-class frigates, as well as twenty Dagger-class light cruisers and two Aquila-class battlecruisers.

Lead Ship: DSFS Levee, Aquila-class battlecruiser

Usually acting as a reserve fleet, the Third Fleet contains sixty Duren-class cruisers, twenty Draav-class frigates, twenty Dagger-class light cruisers, fifteen Sabre-class light cruisers, ten Brightlance-class frigates, and five Aquila-class battlecruisers.

Lead Ship: DTFS Source of Light, Aquila-class battlecruiser

The only Deraia special fleet is the Escort Fleet. This contains ninety Duren-class cruisers.

Relations with other races

The Deraia have met a few other species.

Aians

The Aians and Deraia have contacted. They are on friendly terms, helping each other out as necessary. The Aians attempted to prevent the destruction of Solin.

Zyrothans

The Deraia and Zyrothans are allies, trading and sharing information.

Iridi

The Deraia and Iridi are allies. They assist each other in exploration.

Lutrians

Lutrians and Deraia trade together, and also have a military alliance.

Detroni

Detroni often work with Deraia as assistants or workmen.

Vrah

Deraia worlds and ships often contain Vrah, which are used in politics and war.

Salsenes

The Deraia and the Salsenes coexist peacefully in many parts of the galaxy.

Aoarus

The Deraia and Aoarus are in a state of hostilities- the Deraia have lost 153 ships to them.
