The Stratronus are a type of mechanical lifeform of which little is known. They seem to have become the willing servants of the Sarai. They were first encountered in the Empyrean universe.

Design

Stratronus resemble mechanical snakes. Their bodies are modular, formed from several dozen segments which can be swapped around. Each segment is intelligent and possesses sensors, tools, and weapons, as well as mass-repulsion systems to allow hovering and small reaction thrusters.

When over ten segments join together, the foremost divides in two to form a kind of head, and a large, spherical 'eye' is constructed between the two halves. Through this, the Stratronus can talk and interact with technology. The hindmost segment lengthens and develops a powerful modulated laser.

If the number of segments falls below ten, or the segment is isolated, it will revert to its original shape.

If someone attempts to open up a Stratronus segment, it will self-destruct explosively, leaving only vapour. They are opaque to x- and gamma rays.

Intelligence

Stratronus are sapient, and are extremely powerful computers.

History

The Stratronus were first encountered by a Sarai exploratory ship travelling through Empyrean. It discovered a number of Stratronus segments floating in space around a dead planet, in an area of space containing anomalous levels of space debris.

Upon being taken into the Sarai ship, the segments activated and came together. It is believed that they 'imprinted' on the Sarai, taking them as their new masters, and obeying their orders. They reproduced rapidly once given access to scrap metal, and their usefulness meant that they were spread around to all Sarai colonies. Despite continual Sarai attempts to give them autonomy, they refuse and continue to assist Sarai however they can.
