Black skin would be problematic for a desert-dwelling species. Black- especialy pitch black- retains heat very well. A bit too well, if you live in a desert. -Ping

Correct. Most desert animals have sandy-coloured skin. -Holbenisaur
Atrenids actually evolved before the Merge occured (and therefore the deserts), and since their science is so well-devloped, they actually engineered themselves to stay the same. Now with leaving Petaurista, they have finally taken off that engineering and can evolve like the rest of the multiverse. -Styrp

Candle-head! What's the reason for that adaptation? -Holbenisaur

I've always seen them in my head that way, and I don't know why yet, frankly :) -Styrp
On Earth, there are a lot of adaptations that aren't actually needed. Sometimes things are just a coincidence. -Ping
Fair enough. :P Maybe their skull precluded lateral brain growth. Maybe it's for radiating heat away, with many blood vessels. Nothing so large as a head extension or extra limb is kept for no reason. The appendix, etc. all serve a purpose just because we don;t know the reason doesn't mean there isn't one. ;) -Holbenisaur
